Envy the CyberBuss Tribe

Tuesday, November 28, 2000

By Senior Editor John H. Farr

Some of you (the ones we'd most like to meet :-) will find your pulse rates elevated after reading this San Jose Mercury News story about CyberSam and his magic bus. Isn't it time for everyone to get out of the office and into the sunlight? Read on...

Basically this is all about a Web designer named Sam Frangiamore, 33, who liked his work but hated being cooped up in an office. Why not work from anywhere, even the Grand Canyon? The Internet makes mobility possible, so why keep doing things the old way like most people do? Sam and a friend bought an old bus and outfitted it with "bed, sofa, sink, shelves, and 10 golf-cart batteries to run computers, light bulbs and anything else that needed plugging in." After adding a satellite modem, radio transmitter, and GPS, they were ready to roll.

You can ride along with the CyberBuss at http://www.cyberbuss.com/, but be advised that the connection is slow. And if you want to ride along in person, you might have to stand in line or create your own version. Does this sound like something more than a few people would like to do?

"The Buss has traveled along the West Coast, visiting hot springs and coastal cliffs, from the Pacific Northwest to Baja California, from Las Vegas to Death Valley. There are plans to explore Montana and Canada. The annual springtime Cyberbuss Costume Ball at Hunter's Point helps raise funds. Next year, the ball will take place in Seattle."

[The current CyberBuss folk think this could onlyh have originated in San Francisco and perhaps they're right. But all it takes is gumption, technology, and a little cash. You'll have to supply the spiritual glue, too. Now get out there and do it! And invite this editor along... -- JHF]
